Objective: I will know that Spain created a large colony in the Americas

2. encomienda: a grant from the Spanish government that gave a Spanish settler the right to control local Native Americans

4. missionary: someone who travels to a new land to persuade others to believe in a particular religion
Important Facts
* The colony of New Spain - in present day Mexico
* Spain wanted to settle to gain wealth and power as well as convert the Native Americans to the Catholic religion
* Spain grew rich by selling the gold and silver they found
* Native Americans were forced into slavery and had to work in the mines - many died from overwork and disease
* Spanish Class Structure
1. peninsulares - Spaniards born in Spain
2. creoles - American born to Spanish parents
3. mestizos - a mix of Native American and Spanish
4. Native Americans & Enslaved Africans
* St. Augustine - Spanish fort and settlement
* Spain destroyed the French fort in Florida, they were afraid they would gain power and riches
* Spain could control and protect ships in the waterways from the fort at St. Augustine
* Spain relied on the Timucuas for food and work

2. investor: gives money to a business hoping to earn more money in return
3. cash crop: a crop raised to sell, not for use by the people growing it
4. House of Burgesses: the legislative body set up in Jamestown, their government
5. representatives: people chosen by voters to speak and act for them

* Sir Walter Raleigh wanted to set up a colony in North America
* Colonists depended on local Native Americans for food, when they stopped helping many colonists almost died from Starvation
* The settlers of Roanoke island disappeared after John white returned to England for supplies, still today it is not know what happened to them
* The Virginia Company established a settlement called Jamestown after King James I
* The Virginia company gained money from investors that hoped to gain profits from the gold and silver that was found in America
* They built their settlement inland so that Spanish ships could not attack
* They had a plan for how their colony would be set up and they were told to treat the natives with respect
* Problems in Jamestown were caused by swampy lands that carried disease infested mosquitos

Objectives: * Summarize the economic and religious reasons that caused the Pilgrims and Puritans to settle in New England
* Explain the significance of the Mayflower Compact
* Describe the relationship between the Native Americans and the English settlers in New England

2. Mayflower Compact - an agreement signed by all of the men on the Mayflower. The agreement stated that thy would all work together to make "just and equal" laws, that no one would have more power or control than anyone else

4. Puritans - a group from England that left in search of religious freedom
